How to flush a nephrostomy tube

Does your nephrostomy require flushing? If you have a nephrostomy and have been taught to flush it to maintain flow, this film offers a refresher on how to do this at home.

For this procedure you require:

  • Someone who has been taught to perform this procedure
  • 0.9% sodium chloride
  • 10ml luer lock or luer tip syringe
  • sterile gauze
  • Alcohol-based hand rub
  • Blunt disposable clamps
  • Alcohol (chlorhexidine) wipe
  • Sterile nephrostomy drainage bag
